As we were walking down the road and talking, I said something and turned around to find that she was not next to me. I looked behind and saw her running and beating a man with gray hair with her umbrella. The man did not even complain and went ahead.
I asked her what was that all about. She said he deliberately made a physical contact. Almost every women could relate to this kind of “touching” everyday as they make their way to schools, colleges, work or even to a place nearby.
When the recent Mangalore attacks happened, she was in fury. I could seeing her blood boiling up and am sure she would have loved to kick their @!#$%. I often told her that she should join a “Nari Mukti Morcha Andalon” but most of the times I tell her to let it go. Something she won’t!
I know it is not easy but then it is a kind of Fight or Flight situation, you have to decide how you are going to handle it when it happens. The best way is to confront them, most of them don’t actually expect a reaction and that is what boost these sinners. Better attract the attention of the crowd and give them a nice thrashing.
I remember the first time when I came across such incident. Walking with Amma as teenager towards my home. A girl probably of my age with her Mom were coming from the opposite direction. I then saw a guy coming from behind them and moving his hand over the girl. I was taken aback as I had never seen such thing happening before. The Mom and the girl hardly reacted as he passed.
If it is not the touching then it is the staring. People do check out each other but what is not welcome when it remains eyed for a long time. Even school going kids do that. I was surprised when I saw a school going boy standing near the seat reserved for women in the bus and staring at them intently. If you do find someone doing that ask them what their problem is. It is a wrong mentality in our society that we let people stare and don’t confront them.
This reminds me of one the MTV Bakra’s episode years back, where they showed a girl being harassed by a roadside romeo at a bus stop. What was disheartening to see that no one (read male) intervened even when she asked for help from the people standing beside her. Only one women stood up and tried to stop that romeo. She was telling her brother (who had a good built) to stop the man but her brother choose to stood there and do nothing.
I don’t know if you remember this, but way back in 2002 when a minor mentally challenged girl got raped in the Mumbai local train in the presence of five men, out of which one was a reporter whose account as an eyewitness was on the front page. They did nothing and watched as a drunken got into his act and then got off the train. The question that came to my mind was why they did not stopped him.
When I first read the story the one thing that came to my mind was the man carrying a weapon? or he was of a good built that prevented them from stopping him? I was angry at them for not standing up when I saw the picture of the accused who was nothing but a thin frame man who could have been stopped. It was really a shame for men specially. I am not sure how they were and are able to sleep in the night.
This is our society built on insensitivity, though we prefer to add the term “fear” to to display our inability to act. We forget that the women who is being eve-teased is a mother, wife, sister and daughter of someone.
What would you do if someone did this to a women in your family?
Hope the next time, if you see a women being harassed by roadside romeos, you know what would be the right thing to do...

Its time we in India stopped calling this evil of sexual harrassment by the stupid term "eve teasing"...........t he problem is serious and deep rooted and labbelling it as teasing is tantamount to trivialising the issue.No where else in the world this term used to describe the harrassment of the female gender.

Highest number of reported rapes in USA. A testament and damning at the same time. A testament to the growing boldness of American women to report rape. Damning on the number of rapes.

Firstly I agree to Me Enki that in conservative countries many events are not reported...
Secondly in a modern society a victim can move on with life and still make a living or have a relationship...but in remote & backwards areas rapist males roam freely but the victim is doomed be socially outcasted as if it was her fault to lose her ”modesty”...

You cannot compare a ship with a train. They are two different utilities. Similarly, you cannot compare American culture with Indian. I am simply saying that cursing tradition and sleeping with the same tradition when its suits is unacceptable and very unfair. The same conservative society discriminates men as much as women but in different ways. You cannot have selective judgement over these matters and encourage modernity which in effect supports the discrimination of men.

According to your own philosophy men are victimized just as much as women. From the numbers you have accurately posted, men suffer from violent crime, economic degradation & personal alienation resulting in suicide in mass numbers, just as women. Though you may hate the equality of men and women (see definition of feminist), men and women are already equally brutalized in our society. What you fail to see is that this is the result of not a ”feminist lobby” but patriarchal society, a patriarchal society inherited from the past and hanging like a irons around our necks.

I don’t hate equality of men and women. I hate the equality that feminists preach - female domination. That’s equality according to feminists. These dirty acts are more a personification of the moral degradation of our society.Plus its more so in the metros and major cities rather than small towns....this is also due to the invisiblity offered where these elements feel that they can get away with anything and stay anon...
Its the people who should not let incidents such as this go unpunished rather than looking the other way or blaming the poor girs...in fact subjigation of the woman is a special feature of our society....rape was used as a weapon by the upper classes to keep in place a creepy caste system..(still done )..
Plus one more aspect is that class and society as a whole still have not come to terms with equal rights and a place for the woman in the mainstream...
In addition...lack of knowledge on sex and sex related matters also lead to a deprivation and causes peculiar behaviour...and the habit of blaming the lady by family and society makes it difficult for the woman to act strongly...
There are sexual peverts and creeps belonging to the well heeled and educated middle class too who tend to immoral acts...and a mob mentality...for whom the modern girl...indian or foreign...is always available...such elements need to be trashed soundly..
Or all of us can carry pink chaddis....and gift it the next time to them in public....what say?

Generally eve-teasing is done for pleasure. This pleasure has to be dominated by fear, fear of punishment. Police can’t be made totally responsible for this, public also has to help in this.
Educate girls to fight against it when ever it happens not only for them but also for others. Boys please respect women and fight against eve-teasing and parents don’t restrict girls in dealing with the menace but support them.

This is, in a sick way, quite true. What kind of ”pleasure”? Not sexual pleasure but sadistic pleasure. The pleasure some people feel if they could beat up someone using martial arts for example. This is a common fantasy exploited in many Bollywood movies. In America we usually fantasize about killing people with big guns. See our Hollywood movies. Both fantasies are sick and are the symptoms of sick societies.

This will happen again. But this time they will not return power to men.

Eve-teasing or better still sexual harassment doesn’t stop at bus-stops, theaters and market places. One may recall the incidence in Punjab almost a decade ago wherein a very senior police officer was suspended for indecent behaviour towards a female colleague. Its my luck I never faced anything as such in 22 years of my life.
The post reminded of an incident that happened many years ago told to me by my mum- she and her friends were travelling in metro. it was very crowded. one of the man standing near mum’s friend took out his penis and placed it on the shoulder of my mum’s friend. her friend could not react. seeing this my mum took out a safety pin from her bangles and struck the man where it would hurt the worst.

Chitra, Nice seeing you here. I agree with you wholly. Unlike in the past, I see the current women take self defense classes and participate in Karate, KungFU kind of lessons in metro cities. These are important for them when they are alone and returning from work at late hours etc in India.
If there is a danger, until the law enforcement comes to assistance, they should be able to protect themselves and I encourage imparting these to our children, as a parent.

It is also pertinent to note that according to the National Family Survey (inspite of it using the now heavily criticized Greenberg lake model rather then the more reliable conflict of Tactical scale model which is more reliable) on domestic violence only 25% of the violence is caused by men and out of it a very small number is committed by husbands, while a full 75% of the violence is perpetrated by the women. It’s not a mans world - nor is it a womens world, we HAVE to live here together - unless they find another planet!
No one should harrass or molest anyone else man or women.
Fortunately here in Australia our laws aren’t gender based (from my knowledge)and both men and women have been charged with these offences as they should be.
It was the women in this country that worked together by net working and got the services to help other women and now the men are doing the same for their fellow man, helping to support each other when needed.
I suggest may be the men in your country who feel the need to help their fellow man - start to do something positive and help other men in the same way and start networking, instead of complaining and then everyone would benefit.

This change took place in our society in the 60’s and 70’s, its been a slow process coming to fruition.
The radical feminists created awareness by attention seeking for publicity which created thought provoking analysis of the issues of the times.
These feminist issues now in our society are considered mundane and unremarkable, mainstream things that that are not new and have transitioned into realistic society, it hasn’t created widespread abuse of men, so its no where bad and societies around the world are on the same process and we know where this process goes, its really nothing to be worried about, societies cope and adapt and yours will to.
The genders have been steeped in tradition for ceturies so in the light of modern realization of peoples rights to be their own individuals and their own identity to pursue their own lifes fulfillment (including your own happiness)
Rohan you are putting your own happiness in jeopardy, by not taking a wholistic understanding of the momentous transition that is taking place in historical terms, and your own displaced change of expectations of the raditional life that you were brought up in, and your refusal to accept the change that is coming.
If you were to take advantage of the new opportunities available in the opposite sex to benefite your own happiness, then you could easily find examples of modern couples who are doing very well and thriving with modern ideals.
Why is it impossible that you can’t join in and take advantage of the new opportunities yourself or at least intellecually admire the equal and broader opportunities available to both men and women to live as they choose, and there is no reason that you can’t either.
There is far more diversity in an equal rights society than traditional societies which means that you have far more chance of selecting someone compatible to your own expectations.
Please keep in mind that your society is caught up in a turbulent historic transition and you have to make your way in this situation and also try to help the process; - of pointing out the inconsistency’s of bias within the process, - which you are making clear with the issue of dowery’s, which is part of old traditions that need to be addressed.
Your sense of fairness is correct but please try to keep everything in a balanced perspective for men and for women and don’t let your anger of injustice cloud your judgement.

I think its time for masculists also to become radical enough to create awareness of the problems of men and to FORCE the society into thinking about it.

The problem is that men are still traditional when it comes to women and continue to accept abuse from women without even knowing about it. Men are abused all over the world except that they take it as a routine such abuse. Its time men stopped this. And time women respected the rights of men. This abuse of men is widespread except that it is not over the edge. Men still don’t have the same rights as women but don’t take up the initiative to start a revolution simply because the extent of violation of their rights is not to an extreme. This does not mean that men are not abused. They are abused and their rights are violated big time. Yes, societies always cope with change but injustice remains constant. Societies don’t break down because of change. But what about injustice?

Yeah, this product of the rennaisance movement will also come to an end after sometime as people would realise the price they had to pay for liberalism, individualism, careerism, consumerism and materialism that the west is exporting. More and more families are breaking up and children born out of such families are disturbed and have psychiatric problems. Individual rights, liberalism etc are fine within limits. This so-called momentous chance is creating grave injustice to men. Acceptance of new things is fine as long as it does not cause injustice. This is not the case. We are made to pay both ways. Afterall, feminists made their intentions clear in the beginning itself that they wanted to create a society where men are subordinate to women.

Where are the opportunities? We men are expected to perform the same medieval roles that we used to. Protect and provide women. Pay maintenance to women. The new opportunity is only for women who can rule over the men. I have seen many modern couples who got into problems. All men are modern and support feminists until they get bitten by the Feminist-Talibanist laws. Most guys who are making a noise today were feminists earlier. I don’t agree with you here. Equal rights society and a liberal society is not always and not necessarily what it claims to be. Who controls public thought and popular opinion rules such societies. The social force that controls the media and education system rules that society. Diversity is a ploy to make backdoor entry into the system. For example, feminists in India have total monopoly and control over the media and through that, they have controlled public perception. Its not a liberal society at all when public and popular perception is under the control of certain forces.

If that’s the end result of granting so called equal status to women, I am afraid we need to remain traditional instead of turning into worshipers of modernity. I have always been of the opinion that one of the best ways to verify the usefulness of any theory is to check the consequences after its implementation.
Well,we do not wish to carve ourselves in the image sponsored by West.If they are Okay with their so-called flawed theories we have no problem with that. But we do not wish to rope in same set of problems that have now virtually shattered the citadels of Western society.

Its the people who should not let incidents such as this go unpunished rather than looking the other way or blaming the poor girs...in fact subjigation of the woman is a special feature of our society....rape was used as a weapon by the upper classes to keep in place a creepy caste system..(still done )..
Plus one more aspect is that class and society as a whole still have not come to terms with equal rights and a place for the woman in the mainstream...
In addition...lack of knowledge on sex and sex related matters also lead to a deprivation and causes peculiar behaviour...and the habit of blaming the lady by family and society makes it difficult for the woman to act strongly...
There are sexual peverts and creeps belonging to the well heeled and educated middle class too who tend to immoral acts...and a mob mentality...for whom the modern girl...indian or foreign...is always available...such elements need to be trashed soundly..

Yes, one reason for this existing in cities is anonymity. But there are other reasons too. Cultural clashes and of values is another. If you make a survey, you will notice that this pervert behaviour is also because of society itself which refuses to create sexual outlets to both men and women. So, it results in pervert behaviour. For every crime that takes place, the soceity is also to blame.
Regarding your statement that women are not regarded equal to men in society, and subjugation of women, I would say that women have more than equal rights with men in India and the entire feminist west. Laws, media, judiciary, govt. and society are all pro-women and it is men who are actually suppressed. Its my feeling that this frustration of not being liberated from traditional roles could also be a reason for perverted behaviour along with what I expressed earlier. [No sexual outlet].
